One year ago, Virgil’s House opened its doors with a simple belief: Hope Lives Here.
Since then, those words have become so much more than a motto. They’ve become recovery, second chances, hard conversations, laughter in the kitchen, new beginnings, full rooms, growing partnerships, and a community built around the idea that people deserve somewhere safe to land while they rebuild.
We are so incredibly proud to celebrate one year of Virgil’s House and all of the people who have helped make this place what it is.
Please join us as we celebrate the residents, friends, families, partners, supporters, and community members who have been part of this first remarkable year — and help us look ahead to everything still to come.

Virgil’s House
Virgil’s House is a charitable initiative dedicated to providing safe, stable, and dignified housing for individuals experiencing homelessness, addiction, and medical or mental-health instability. Our purpose is to create trauma-informed, recovery-oriented living environments that integrate housing with comprehensive, on-site medical care, mental-health services, medication-assisted treatment (MAT), and social-work support.
Through a whole-person model of care, Virgil’s House seeks to move individuals beyond crisis and toward long-term stability, self-sufficiency, and restored community connection. Services are delivered with compassion, clinical integrity, and respect for each individual’s autonomy and lived experience.
Virgil’s House represents the first site in a broader charitable vision. The Powell Family Foundation is committed to expanding this model throughout the Pittsburgh region and, as resources allow, beyond—developing additional facilities tailored to the needs of distinct and underserved populations. These may include housing and integrated care settings for women, men in recovery, older adults, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and individuals requiring harm-reduction–based support.
Each future site will uphold the same core principles: dignity, safety, access to care, and coordinated support under one roof. By building and sustaining these environments, Virgil’s House and the Powell Family Foundation aim to address critical gaps in the continuum of care and contribute to healthier, more equitable communities.
